What is the PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) Program?
The Discover Scuba Diving program is the most popular single-day diving activity in the world. It is not a certification course, but rather a quick, safe, and highly enjoyable introduction to the underwater world. It is specifically designed for tourists and beginners who want to try scuba diving without committing to a multi-day course.
1. Requirements & Prerequisites
-
Minimum Age: Participants must be 10 years old or older.
-
Swimming Skills: Strong swimming skills are not required. Because an instructor is right beside the participant holding their hand or guiding them closely, even confident non-swimmers can enjoy it.
-
Health: Completion of a brief medical questionnaire to ensure they are fit to dive.
2. Training Environment & Depth
-
Shallow Water Practice: The experience begins in a swimming pool or a very shallow, calm beach area to practice breathing and build confidence.
-
Open Water Dive: The actual tour takes place on a real coral reef or dive site.
-
Maximum Depth: A maximum of 12 meters (40 feet), though most introductory dives stay comfortably between 5 to 10 meters.
3. How the Program Works (Single Day)
The entire experience typically takes 2 to 3 hours:
-
The Briefing (15 mins): The instructor explains basic safety rules, how the equipment works, how to equalize ear pressure, and essential underwater hand signals.
-
Basic Skill Practice: In waist-deep water, the guest practices 3 easy safety skills: breathing through the regulator, clearing water from the mask, and recovering a lost regulator.
-
The Guided Tour: The instructor takes the guest down into the reef. The instructor handles all the technical buoyancy adjustments, leaving the guest free to relax, kick their fins, and look at the fish.
