The PADI Junior Open Water Diver course is the full international scuba certification for kids and teens. Academically and practically, it requires the exact same training, theory, and skills as the adult course, but with special safety restrictions tailored to younger divers.
Here is a breakdown of the course details:
1. Prerequisites & Age Groups
-
Minimum Age: 10 years old (covers ages 10 to 14).
-
Water Skills Required:
-
Swim 200 meters (unassisted) or 300 meters (with mask, fins, and snorkel).
-
Float/tread water continuously for 10 minutes.
-
-
Health: Must complete a standard medical questionnaire (and get doctor clearance if needed).
2. Strict Safety Limits (By Age)
Because safety comes first, PADI enforces specific depth limits and buddy rules for junior divers based on their exact age:
| Age Group | Maximum Depth Limit | Buddy Requirements |
| Ages 10 – 11 | 12 meters (40 feet) | Must dive with a PADI Professional or a certified parent/guardian. |
| Ages 12 – 14 | 18 meters (60 feet) | Must dive with a certified adult diver. |
3. What the Course Involves (3 Phases)
The course typically takes 3 to 4 days to complete:
-
Knowledge Development: Learning diving principles, physics, and safety protocols using PADI eLearning or a manual, followed by a final exam.
-
Confined Water Dives: Practicing basic scuba skills (like mask clearing, regulator recovery, and buoyancy control) in a swimming pool or pool-like shallow water.
-
Open Water Dives: Completing 4 open water dives in the ocean or a lake to apply their skills in a real underwater environment.
4. The Automatic Upgrade at Age 15
One of the best features of this course is that the certification never expires.
Once the junior diver turns 15 years old, their license automatically upgrades to a standard PADI Open Water Diver certification. They instantly inherit the adult depth limit of 18 meters and standard buddy rules, without needing to retake the course.
